Norris Reminds Seniors to Take Advantage of Tax Freeze
NASHVILLE, Tenn. --- Tennessee Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris (R-Collierville) joined AARP leaders today in reminding Tennesseans that the application deadlines are fast approaching for many of the counties and cities participating in the senior citizens property tax freeze program. Presently, 19 municipal governments and 20 of Tennessee’s 95 counties have adopted the property tax freeze, allowing the benefit to be enjoyed by over 17,000 Tennesseans. Other local jurisdictions across the state are considering the initiative. Application for the program must be submitted by participating property owners every year, and such application is usually made in the Spring. Most participating jurisdictions have deadlines in March or April.
Norris, who proposed the constitutional amendment and passed the legislation creating the freeze program, created the website www.tennesseniors.com to serve as a resource for those interested in the program and other senior issues in Tennessee. “It is wonderful to see communities in my district, and all across the state, taking advantage of the tax freeze,” Norris said. “I look forward to more citizens voicing the desire for tax relief to their local legislative bodies so that we might see these benefits spread.”
Of Norris’s 32nd Senatorial District, the following jurisdictions have adopted the freeze and instituted the listed deadlines for 2009 applications to the program:
